Color Theory for Real Life

8 min read6 chapters

Color is the fastest way to look pulled-together - or slightly off. A small, deliberate palette does most of the work for you.

Find your palette

Hold colors near your face in daylight. The ones that make you look rested and awake are yours; the ones that wash you out are not. Build around the winners.

Start with neutrals

A base of two or three neutrals lets everything combine effortlessly. Treat color as an accent on top of that base, never as the foundation itself.

The 60-30-10 rule

Aim for roughly 60% dominant neutral, 30% secondary, and 10% accent. It keeps an outfit balanced without any conscious effort once you internalize it.

Contrast and undertone

Match warm tones with warm and cool with cool, then decide how much contrast you want - high contrast reads bold, low contrast reads quiet and refined.

How Stirolo helps

Stirolo maps your wardrobe palette and only suggests combinations that sit in harmony with your tones.
